Match Report: Tunisia vs. England - A Harry Kane Double Ensures That England Get Off to a Winning Start

England had to dig deep but a 92ndminute Harry Kane header ensured that for only the 3rd time in their history, the Three-lions start a World Cup campaign off with a victory.

The England Captain had got his country off to a blistering start after found the back of the net in the 13thminute. The chance came after John Stone got on the end of a Kieran Trippier corner which forced the Tunisian keeper into making a great save that, unfortunately, fell onto the right foot of Harry Kane.

Gareth Southgates men looked in control for the first twenty minutes of the game as their direct attacking play resulted in an array of chances which saw Jesse Lingard hit the post and have a shot saved.

A controversial penalty looked to have sealed a point for a well organised Tunisian team after Kyle Walker was harshly penalised for what seemed flying arm on Fakhreddine Ben Youssef in the 35thminute. England keeper, Jordan Pickford got his fingers to the penalty from Ferjani Sassi but that was not enough as it slotted into the bottom left corner.

England themselves were denied two penalties of their own when Harry Kane was wrestled to the ground on two occasions by goal-scorer Sassi, one being minutes before half-time and the latter being in the middle of what was a flat second half.

Despite the injections of both Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Marcus Rashford in the second-half, England failed to reach the heights that were shown earlier in the game and create clear-cut chances. One did arise though, in the 91st minute when another Kieran Trippier corner was met by John Stones who flicked it onto striker Harry Kane who was alert to head home from 3-yards.

The Three-lions will be looking to add another 3-points on Sunday and finalise their qualification into the second round when the face Panama who was thrashed 3-0 by Belgium earlier today.

MOTM – Kieran Trippier

Although Harry Kane will take the headlines for his heroic double his Tottenham teammate, Kieran Trippier deserves the award after in what was only his 8thappearance for England. He proved to be England’s most creative player, with both of his corners resulting in the two goals.
